Encryption

Data volume encryption was introduced with SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 09. With 2.0, log volume encryption is now also supported. You enable log volume encryption using SQL. Data volume encryption can also be enabled using the new SAP HANA cockpit.

SAP Earth Observation Analysis Microservices on YaaS

Getting Started:

The following describes the steps to use the SAP Earth Observation Analysis service:

1. Sign In under My Account on YaaS. If not a member, you will need to Register under My Account on YaaS. It is free.
2. Go to the YaaS Market and choose the option Worldwide (Beta) at the top-right corner of the window. Scroll down and click on the SAP Earth Observation Analysis package.
3. Once the request for subscription is made, create a project for the organization to subscribe to a package. Enter the display name of the project as you want it to display in the Builder. The project identifier is a unique identifier.

Backup the Database(s) for SAP HANA Express – by the SAP HANA Academy

There a three tools you can use to make a backup of your SAP HANA database:

1. SAP HANA cockpit
2. SAP HANA studio
3. hdbsql

For the VM, I should maybe add that you can also – of course – create a snapshot of the VM but this does require quite a bit of hard disk space.

Capturing and Replaying Workloads - by the SAP HANA Academy

Introduction

One of the new SPS 12 features for monitoring and managing performance in SAP HANA is the ability to capture and replay workloads. This feature enables you to take a performance snapshot of your current system -- a captured workload -- and then execute the same workload again on the system (or another system from backup) after some major hardware or software configuration change has been made. This will help you evaluate potential impacts on performance or stability after, for example, a revision upgrade, parameter modifications, table partition or index changes, or even whole landscape reorganisations.

In this blog, I will describe the required preparation and the operational procedures.

Parallelization options with the SAP HANA and R-Integration

Why is parallelization relevant?

The R-Integration with SAP HANA aims at leveraging R’s rich set of powerful statistical, data mining capabilities, as well as its fast, high-level and built-in convenience operations for data manipulation (eg. Matrix multiplication, data sub setting etc.) in the context of a SAP HANA-based application. To benefit from the power of R, the R-integration framework requires a setup with two separate hosts for SAP HANA and the R/Rserve environment. A brief summary of how R processing from a SAP HANA application works is described in the following:

• SAP HANA triggers the creation of a dedicated R-process on the R-host machine, then
• R-code plus data (accessible from SAP HANA) are transferred via TCP/IP to the spawned R-process.
• Some computational tasks take place within the R-process, and
• the results are sent back from R to SAP HANA for consumption and further processing.

Introducing the SAP Automated Predictive Library

You may have already heard about the recent release of SAP Predictive Analytics 2.0, but may not be aware that this also includes the SAP Automated Predictive Library (APL) for SAP HANA.

The APL is effectively the SAP InfiniteInsight (formerly KXEN) predictive logic optimized and adapted to execute inside the SAP HANA database itself for maximum performance - just like the SAP HANA Predictive Analysis Library (PAL) and Business Function Library (BFL).

Obviously when you already have data in SAP HANA it makes sense to perform heavy-duty processing such as data mining as close as possible to where the data resides - and this is exactly what the APL provides.

By way of comparison, the PAL provides a suite of predictive algorithms that you can call at will - as long as you know which algorithm you need, whereas the APL focuses on automation of the predictive process and uses it's own in built intelligence to identify the most appropriate algorithm for a given scenario. So the two are very much complementary.

About the Certification

The Support Associate certification was introduced with SPS 06 (June 2013). Tim Breitwieser blogged about it at the time on SCN:SAP HANA Certification Program extended with "SAP Certified Support Consultant". In this blog he explained that the exam is "a pre-requisite for VARs to become authorized to deliver support for SAP HANA". Topic Areas
