An overview of XSA commands for beginners

Overview:

In this article I'll try to explain the expected outcome of XSA commands when executed in Linux environment via command line (xs cli). This blog is aimed at helping understand the xs commands. At first, I also faced the similar dilemma of how XS command works and what is expected outcome. So learning by my experience, sharing most commonly used commands which you can easily use to understand and monitor xs too.

Pre-requisite:

1. OS level access via <sid>adm on HANA DB host

2. User credentials of xsa_admin

XSA – NodeJS

Introduction

In the fifth and final part of our XSA blog series, we will be looking at the exciting topic of NodeJS. What functions does NodeJS offer under XSA? How can existing models be expanded? When (and why) should NodeJS be used with native HANA models? We aim to answer these questions and more with our sample model.

In the first blog, we have already seen that HANA XSA consists of many more services than was the case with the classic XSC environment. NodeJS plays a central role in this regard.

SAP SAP HANA XSA (mainly FSPRO) applications Access via external web dispatcher

Overview

Under this blog, I have outlined how to configure an SAP Web Dispatcher (WD) so that it acts as the reverse-proxy server for an XSA instance where SSL is terminated at the XSA server. The WD will simply route requests to the XSA instance. This setup allows the XSA host to be hidden from the end user.

Mainly if you have port-based XSA installed due to application limitations.

Accessing Objects from Another Local Container in HANA XSA and Deploying Selected Artifacts Using PACKAGE.JSON in HANA DB: A Step-by-Step Guide

It’s recommended to use Shared local Container/Schema details within the development team while working on the same project or Dependent Data model. The procedure outlined below explains how to access objects from another local container by modifying the YAML file in HANA XSA:

1. If you are the owner of the Source local container/schema (Cont_1), you need to provide access to another developer who intends to consume the object. Use the SQL script provided below to grant access:

Basic Principles of SAP HANA XSA

What is SAP HANA XSA?

First, one important piece of information: XSC i.e., the native developments of SAP HANA artefacts in the HANA Studio, is obsolete. It is no longer being developed and new features will not be added. The future is XSA and that is where SAP’s entire focus will be regarding HANA.

SAP HANA XSA is a paradigm shift in developing with SAP HANA. This statement may at first seem extreme, because at first glance, compared to XSC, the application has just gotten new components such as NodeJS or HTML5.

Run XSA application(UI part) locally with visual studio code

I have been working on XSA for a while, the SAP WEB IDE FOR SAP HANA is a bit outdated(especially for ui5 development) and sometimes not that performant. Recently i managed to move the xsa application to visual studio code and run the UI part(for now) locally. This blog post will show you how I moved and the solution for the issue encountered during the setup.

Note: This blog post is about moving your xsa development (UI part at least) to visual studio code, not about using visual studio code to do xsa app development from scratch

some prerequisite:

1.visual studio code +plugin

2.node js+ git

3. a running xsa application in your xsa( to get the destination and service binding info)

SAP HANA XS Advanced Administration, Deployment and Operations

1. Deployment Options

There are various ways of deploying the XS Advanced runtime. Before deploying the XSA many scenarios need to considered that will have impact on your landscape maintenance activity .For example the system refresh scenarios where you will need to refresh only a certain tenants instead of complete system this deployment plays a key role . I will go through the limitations in detail in backup restore section. In general, The following additional services run where XSA is deployed:

◉ xscontroller: Central management component of XSA. It has a view on all deployed and/or running applications, and persists configuration and status information in the database

SAP XSA: Basics and how to create synonyms

Making applications for SAP in the past, has always been rooted in proprietary tools and frameworks. However, with the onset of the “cloud” movement, SAP is providing its customers and developers, a completely new services-oriented application model, that leverages containers and the latest open source standards, for cloud-based applications.

More Info: C_HANAIMP_16 Certification

Developers have been able to provide web-based SAP applications, through the use of WebDynpro for a long time. However, that came with its own set of drawbacks. Newer alternatives now use Fiori-based UI, with an OData service from the backend, that transports data back and forth. This approach provides us with ample amount of flexibility on the UI side, but for the backend, we are still dependent on ABAP and the NetWeaver application server, to execute the business and processing logic for us and the database server to perform queries and send data to the Netweaver AS. We also know this as the SAP R3 architecture, where we divide things into the presentation layer, application layer and the database layer.

Jenkins Build Process with SAPUI5 through HANA XSA

In this blog, we will build the NodesJS and SAPUI5 app in SAP HANA XSA that controls the Jenkins build process.

What’s Jenkins ?

Jenkins (jenkins.io) offers a simple way to set up a continuous integration or continuous delivery environment for almost any combination of languages and source code repositories using pipelines, as well as automating other routine development tasks.

Socket.IO File Upload in SAP HANA XSA

In this blog, we are going to build a file (.csv) upload app with NodeJS and Socket.io. In previous blog, I created the similar app but using XSJS lib in HANA XSA. With websocket, I would like to overcome the gateway timeout issue when using HTTP post method.

Let’s get started by creating the SAP Cloud Platform Business Application with database, NodeJS and web module.

How to access an SAP HANA XSA Container schema from external applications such as NodeJS

My Licensed To Code colleague Roland Schulz and I have been working on SAP HANA XSA development for the past few years. We have been doing lots of NodeJS development on both SAP HANA XSA and also outside of HANA. We have a scenario which we are developing of a NodeJS application and needed to write data from the external NodeJS application into an SAP HANA Container schema but we could not connect to the schema from the outside.

This is the second blog of the season one of Taming your SAP HANA Express series, episode two.

In the SE01E01 we have seen how to implement a fully qualified XS Classic domain CA-signed SSL certificate.

This episode will tell the story of how to rename and secure the XSA domain.

XSA and SAP Web IDE For SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 03 Feature Revision 1: New Developer Features

Normally when we introduce new features for HANA, it is only done via a new release version (HANA 1.0 or 2.0) or an SPS – Support Package Stack (ex. HANA 2.0 SPS 0, SPS 01, SPS 02, SPS 03). However the XSA runtime and the SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA actually have a rather independent technical infrastructure from the HANA DB itself. Up to this point we’ve never used this feature to deliver new features separate from a HANA release or SPS. But it was always possible.

Developing Speech Interface for XSA Web Applications using Python

In this blog, I am going to talk about how to build conversational interfaces in XSA applications by integrating speech-to-text and text-to-speech APIs. I am also going to briefly cover how web sockets work in python for XSA applications. For those that are not familiar, web sockets are used for live bi-directional communication between clients and a server. Numerous clients can be connected to the same server through which they receive live updates as events. They do not need to make explicit HTTP calls to check for status updates. In addition, the Server can also initiate communication with the client and send updates as opposed to simple HTTP where a client must always initiate communication often leading to polling interfaces.

How to implement Function Import in HANA XS

It is all about a feature that I found missing in HANA XSODATA — support for OData Function Imports.  While this feature can be implemented in a custom way through XSJS, I would like to have this custom implementation compliant with OData V2 specification in order for the consumer application (which is SAPUI5) to be able to leverage the existing ODataModel V2 library.  This is my journey for achieving this requirement — by creating a custom function import utility through XSJS.

Upgrading Web IDE in HANA Express

One of the housekeeping tasks I generally perform in the instances I use to develop actual applications is to upgrade the Web IDE. Not only because some minor bugs are swept away, but also because there’s always some additional functionality that makes development easier.

You would generally need access to the marketplace and a proper license for this. However, the engineering team has made this patch available for download in the download manager in revision 23. If the following rings a bell, you might want to give this a try:
